University of Sheffield
Why is the management of water important to your organisation?
We are a large organisation with hundreds of buildings, many of which are energy- and water-intensive. There are a number of risks associated with water within the university, these include but are not limited to drowning, scalding, waterborne pathogens including legionella and pseudomonas as well as preserving drinking water and process water systems. Our consumption of water has a significant impact on finances and the environment and we are keen to manage this effectively.
What are you hoping to achieve from participating in the Market Improvement Fund Water Stewardship Initiative?
We need to set up an initiative within the university to minimise losses and to look for opportunities to reuse water. A cultural change in the approach we have to our water resources is needed. We are hoping to network with other people / organisation's with different ideas, on how to get the best out of using water in a environmental friendly way. As well as learning from specialists to help develop (and implement) best practice in our management of water.
Why do you think it is important for businesses in the UK to adopt water stewardship practices?
Water is often seen by businesses as a cheap and readily available resource. However, water is a finite resource and the need for water is increasing. By proving we are responsible users we are able to prove we are not adding to this issue. Adopting good practices are key.
